Introduction

The Division of Infectious Diseases provides comprehensive services involving the prevention and treatment of a variety of infectious diseases including community and hospital acquired infections.

To provide comprehensive care and treatment to patients with infectious diseases which include:

Screening, counselling and treatment of

  • HIV infection
  • HIV related opportunistic infections
  • HIV –Hepatitis B and C co-infections
  • HIV related non infectious diseases
  • HIV in pregnancy
  • HIV Pre exposure and post exposure prophylaxis HIV Sero-discordant couples wishing to conceive

Infections from the community including tropical diseases such as:-

  • Dengue Fever
  • Tuberculosis
  • Malaria
  • Leptospirosis
  • Typhoid
  • Melioidosis
  • Chikungunya
  • Filariasis
  • Diarrhoeal diseases
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Other communicable diseases
  • Fever of unknown origin

Screening and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (other than HIV) including syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, herpes and anogenital warts

Hospital acquired infections such as:

  • Hospital acquired pneumonia
  • Line related blood stream infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Surgical site infections

Provision of adult vaccinations

Evaluation and treatment of infections in the immunocompromised including cancer

Travel medicine

Providing preventive medical care such as pre-travel vaccinations, pre exposure prophylaxis or altitude sickness medicine to international and local travelers. Provide post travel consultation and care including evaluation of fever in returning travelers

Infection control and prevention

  • Management of needlestick injuries and accidental exposure to blood or body fluid among health care providers.
  • Provision of information on treatment to be provided to patientswith infections with multidrug resistant organisms and measures tobe taken on wards to reduce the risk of transmission
  • Investigation of multi-drug-resistant bacteria outbreak and developan appropriate response.
