Paediatric Surgery is a new specialty in Malaysia and has grown over the last 25 years. It may be further divided mainly into General Paediatric Surgery & Endoscopic Paediatric Surgery (Minimally invasive surgery e.g. laparoscopy, thoracoscopy & robotics).

Conditions managed by Paediatric Surgeons range from simple to complex surgical conditions in children as listed below but not exhaustive by:

  1. Simple surgical conditions:
    1. Phimosis
    2. Hernia/hydrocele
    3. Undescended testis
  2. Complex surgical conditions:
    1. Neonatal conditions: congenital diaphragmatic hernia, congenital pulmonary airway malformation, venous and lymphatic malformations, neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis, malrotation with midgut volvulus, bowel atresia, anorectal malformation and Hirschsprung disease
    2. Conditions in older children: intussusception, biliary atresia, choledochal cyst, appendicitis, Meckel’s diverticulum, inflammatory bowel disease, blunt thoracic and abdominal trauma
  3. Urological conditions:
  4. Childhood malignancy:
    1. Teratoma
    2. Neuroblastoma
    3. Hepatoblastoma
    4. Lymphoma & leukaemia
  5. Special services only available at UMSC:

  2. Endoscopic surgery (“Keyhole” surgery or minimally invasive surgery)
