Clinical Oncology

UMSC Oncology is a branch of medicine which deals with the study and treatment of cancer. Cancer treatment is generally divided into three main modalities – surgery, radiotherapy and systemic therapy. Clinical oncologists treat patients with cancer using non-surgical techniques i.e. radiotherapy and systemic therapy.

The Clinical Oncology Specialty in UM Specialist Centre consists of clinical oncologists who are trained and qualified in these treatment. We offer various techniques of radiotherapy including brachytherapy and advanced techniques like stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT). Systemic therapy includes chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. We also offer radioisotope therapy e.g. radioiodine for thyroid cancer.

Our approach is based on multidisciplinary principles as we work closely with other specialists e.g. surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and palliative care physicians. This is because in most situations the complete treatment involves integration of several treatment modalities either in sequence or in combination. We aim to provide the best care in a comprehensive manner to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients.
