The Respiratory Medicine specialty in UM Specialist Centre is involved with the management of patients with respiratory diseases such as bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic cough, lung cancer, sleep-related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, interstitial lung disease, tuberculosis, community-acquired and healthcare-associated pneumonias, and others.

Consultants in the Respiratory Medicine specialty provide diagnostic and therapeutic flexible bronchoscopy and medical thoracoscopy (or pleuroscopy). We perform endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) which enables real time ultrasound-guided transtracheal and transbronchial needle aspiration of mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes for the staging of lung cancer and diagnosis of diseases involving such lymph nodes.

We provide spirometry and full lung function testing facilty for the diagnosis and evaluation of respiratory diseases.

We are experienced in the diagnosis, staging and treatment of lung cancer using targeted therapy for oncogene driven non-small cell lung cancer, immunotherapy and chemotherapy.

We order and interpret in-laboratory polysomnography for the assessment of sleep apnoea and institute CPAP therapy and non-invasive ventilation.
