The neurosurgical service at UMSC is a service that provides advance neurosurgical facility as well as expertise that is unique to the country.

It is an established service with seven consultant neurosurgeons who are sub-specialised in the respective areas of neurosurgery namely skull base and pituitary neurosurgery, endoscopic neurosurgery, spinal neurosurgery, paediatric neurosurgery, vascular neurosurgery, epilepsy neurosurgery, radiosurgery and functional neurosurgery. By virtue of this, they have enhanced experience in dealing with the wide spectrum of cases within their sub-specialty. This expertise  allows the neurosurgeon to give the patients a better perspective of the condition that they are suffering and the options of management strategies. One of the key elements in creating a tailored management plan for the patient is sound clinical judgement which delves on among other things such as to timing of intervention, corridors of approach to the tumour to minimise complications, other options of treatment etc.  There is a misconception that the management plan hinges only on what is seen on the scan image. UMSC has such neurosurgical expertise at your disposal.

UMSC is one of the facilities in the country to have an intraoperative MRI Imaging system which can be used for cranial surgery to ensure precise resection of brain tumour without compromising surrounding structures. The facility has intraoperative CT scans for spinal instrumentation. The facility also boasts other crucial instruments such as the latest ZEISS microscope, BRAINLAB navigation system, AXIEM Medtronic electromagnetic navigation system, STORZ endoscopes, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, ultrasound dissectors, ultrasonic bone scalpel amongst others. These technological tools are essential in making the surgery as safe and a success story.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an advanced treatment that helps Parkinson’s patients manage symptoms like tremors and stiffness. At UM Specialist Centre (UMSC), DBS therapy is available to patients who struggle with these motor issues. The treatment involves implanting a neuro stimulator into the brain, sending electrical signals to regulate abnormal brain activity and reduce symptoms.

UMSC is a leading provider of DBS in Malaysia, with a specialised team including Consultant Neurologists Prof. Dr. Lim Shen-Yang and Associate. Prof Dr. Tan Ai Huey along with Consultant Neurosurgeon Associate Prof. Dr. Kalai Arasu Muthusamy. Together, we offer personalised care for each patient.

UMSC has reached a pioneering pinnacle in its DBS program by performing the first implantation of the Percept™ RC Neurostimulator in Malaysia and Southeast Asia on 17th October 2024. This cutting-edge device can record brain activity in real-time, allowing doctors to fine-tune the treatment for even better symptom management.

With UMSC’s expertise and advanced technology, Parkinson’s patients in Malaysia have renewed hope for better control over their symptoms and improved quality of life.
