Mr Sivakumar Krishnasamy is the first Malaysian to be awarded Gold medal and overall best performer in the esteemed European Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2016.He is also a gold medalist for the masters in General Surgery and gold medalist for MRCS Edinbrugh exam.With 3 gold medals, he has done the cardiothoracic fraternity of Malaysia proud. He started his working career in 2002 where he completed his MBBS from University Malaya with a book prize from Orthopaedic surgery and started his house officership in Ipoh General Hospital. He then went on to start his training in Intensive care medicine and anaesthesia in 2003 and started training in General surgery in 2004. In 2006 he completed his part 3 MRCS exit exam and was awarded a gold medal with him being awarded the best Asia candidate. In 2006 also he started his Masters in General Surgery programme under University Malaya where he completed it in 2010 with another gold medal. He was then posted to Kota Bharu general hospital as a general surgeon and in January 2011 he joined University Malaya to start his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He spend his early training years in University Malaya till 2013 where he then went to National Heart Institute ( IJN ) where he spend a year.In 2014 he went to UK to further his training in cardiothoracic Surgery where he spend 6 months doing transplant and heart failure surgery in Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and 1 year doing a formal Aortic Fellowship under the guidance of renowned Aortic Surgeon Mr Jorge Mascaro. He then went on to do another year of formal thoracic fellowship in the well renowned Thoracic Unit in the UK , Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and completed his thoracic fellowship there. During this period while he was in the UK he completed his FRCS ( Edin ) CTh ( Cardiothoracic Surgery ) in Mei 2016 and Fellow of the European Board of Cardiothoarcic Surgery in September 2016 where he was awarded the Gold medal and best overall candidate.He then returned back to Malaysia in October 2016 and since then he has been serving as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Suregon in University Malaya Medical Centre. With his vast exposure in Aortic Surgery he has setup a National Aortic MDT with IJN and GHKL and comlex aortic cases were discussed in this MDT.This has led to him oragnizing the first National Aortic Surgery Symposium in July 2017 in colloboration with IJN. Mr Jorge Mascaro was invited from UK to perform operations on complex aortic cases and they did the first Total Aortic Arch replacement in University Malaya using the frozen elephant trunk technique.His close links with Mr Jorge Mascaro has enabled him to make close ties with him and ensure that complex aortic cases can be discussed with Mr Mascaro. With his keen interest in thoracic surgery , he has worked closely with the respiratory team to discuss complex thoracic cases on a bi monthly thoracic MDT and also is in the process of working towards a national lung cancer screening programme.
Since coming back he has also developed new services to the cardiothoracic unit among them is the Endovascular Team PPUM which is a combine team of cardiothoracic suregon , vascular surgeon , interventional radiologist and cardiologist to do complex aortic cases endovascularly and this has made PPUM as one of the regional centres for aortic cases referral.Togather with ICU team PPUM and the cardiothoracic team the ECMO services has also been developed with more cases of VV ECMO being done for patients with ARDS. During his time in UK he has attended the estemeed Birmingham Review course in 2015 and 2016 , EACTS meeting in 2015 and 2016 and being appointed as tutor by Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons Great Britian in the clinical teaching course in Solihul Birmingham. He has also attended the ECMO course organised by Queen Elizabeth Hospital and attended the European Aortic Workshop organised by EACTS in 2016. He has also attended the well recognised coronary revasculariztion workshop in Oxford University by Professor David Taggart in 2014.With his huge academic and clinical experience he is not only involved in teaching undergraduates and postgraduate masters students but also as a formal teacher for the Malaysian Board of Cardiothoracic( In colloboration with Royal College of Surgeons Edinbrugh), where monthly teaching courseis done for the candidates by him.Mr Siva has a huge interest in Quality and hence he has been appointed as the quality manager of the department of surgery. He has also been an invited international speaker recently in Taiwan representing Malaysia in wound care quality. He has also been actively publishing in regional and international journals and has had 4 masters student complete under his guidance.He aspires to create a team based management for all cardiovascular and thoracic conditions and hopes this will enable gold standard management for the patients in general.
