A/Prof Dr Ong was born and educated in Kuala Lumpur. He graduated with MBBS from the University of Malaya in 1995. To fulfill his aim of serving in “far way” lands in the country, he served for 15 years in various hospitals in Kuala Lumpur (HKL, UHKL), Sabah and Sarawak before joining UMMC in 2010. A/Prof Dr Ong obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2000 and the Master of Surgery in 2002. After 2002, he served as a senior lecturer and then Associate Professor in University of Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). He received the Excellence Award in Service from UNIMAS in 2009. A/Prof Dr Ong had most of his urology training in Sarawak General Hospital, Kuching, Sarawak, under senior urologists Dr Teh Guan Chou and Dr Clarence Lei. He passed the Malaysian Board of Urology exit examination in 2004. In the same year, A/Prof Dr Ong won the British Journal of Urology International (BJUI) scholarship to further his training in the United Kingdom. From 2005 to 2007, A/Prof Dr Ong had worked in the Lister Hospital (Stevenage), Charing Cross Hospital (London) and King's College Hospital (London). During his training period in the UK, A/Prof Dr Ong passed the European Board of Urology Examination and the UK Intercollegiate Examination in Urology. He also published a paper in BJUI on retroperitoneal lymph node dissection with Dr Timothy Christmas, a renowned surgeon of the Charing Cross Hospital, London. Currently, for clinical service, A/Prof Dr Ong treats various kinds of urological diseases. The main volume of work comes from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), stones and cancers in the urinary tract. This service is backed by the facilities available in UMSC which include endoscopic, minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. For research, A/Prof Dr Ong focuses on uro-oncology. High Impact Research grants had been obtained to study on bladder and prostate cancer. Involvement in international multicenter trials is also another strong point for the institution as our urology patients are now able to participate in the latest clinical trials just like patients in the developed countries. A/Prof Dr Ong had been actively involved in such trials. A/Prof Dr Ong is actively involved in the activities of the Malaysian Urological Association (MUA). He was the organizing chairman of the 20th Malaysian Urological Conference in 2011 in Kuala Lumpur. Currently, A/Prof Dr Ong serves as the honorary secretary of MUA. A/Prof Dr Ong believes that good quality health care should be accessible to all and it is the duty of the doctor to serve his/her patients with the highest level of care and kindness. He and the urology team of UMSC strive to bring in the latest knowledge and facilities for urology care for all patients.
