Professor Datuk Dr Looi Lai Meng is the University of Malaya, Distinguished Professor and Senior Consultant Histopathologist to its Medical Centre. She studied medicine at the University of Singapore, trained in Anatomical Pathology at UM, Royal Postgraduate Medical School (UK) and the Brigham and Woman Hospital, Boston (USA), and defended her doctorate at UM. During her 30-year career at UM, she also served as Head of Pathology, Deputy-Dean (Postgraduate) and representative to the Malaysian Medical Council. She is currently Chairman of UMMC as Medical Ethics Committee. She is an Examiner of both Royal Colleges of Pathologists, UK and Australasia (RCPA), and past-President of the College of Pathologists, Academy of Medicine Malaysia. She was instrumental in the development of pathology laboratory accreditation standards for Malaysia, the Pathology Act and several National guidelines on pathology and laboratory practices. Her diagnostic histopathology consultancies include cancer and renal pathology, and cardiac transplant pathology for the National Heart Centre. Professor Looi is an accomplished researcher with more than 170 peer-reviewed publications, largely on amyloidosis, kidney disease and tumour pathology in prestigious journals including Cancer, Kidney International, Human Pathology and Nature Medicine. She has been honoured visiting Professor to the Harvard Medical School, Foundation Fellow (1995) and Academician (2005) of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, RCPA Distinguished Fellow (2010), recipient of the National Science Award (1999) and ASEAN Outstanding Scientist Award (2001), and the Nations's Inaugural Profesor Ulung Negara (2010).
