My passion is in helping people with mental health get better and also assisting people with an addiction to smoking to quit.
I am an Associate Professor with the Dept. of Psychological Medicine, University Malaya and consultant psychiatrist in University Malaya Medical Centre. I also consult for BefriendersKL. For research, I am the Chief Coordinator for the University Malaya Centre for Addiction Sciences (UMCAS). I lead the tobacco research group, the Nicotine Addiction Research Group UMCAS (NARCC).
I am particularly interested in mood disorders, anxiety disorders and addiction psychiatry. I treat people with psychosis such as schizophrenia. Lately, I have an interest in assisting the elderly in their mental health care.
In order to facilitate the best care, I received my undergraduate training in the University of Otago, New Zealand. I completed my speciality training in the University of Malaya and am registered with the National Specialist Registry. I went to further my studies and completed a PhD in New Zealand recently. I hold two Fellowships from two World Health Organisation Collaborating Centres (WHOCC) namely in psychosocial and rehabilitation psychiatry from Korea through the Yongin WHOCC and in smoking cessation from the Hong Kong Smoking Cessation WHOCC. I also have certification from New Zealand as a smoking cessation specialist.
I am an advocate for mental health and have given numerous lectures, television and radio appearance and run workshops on mental health to reduce stigma for my patients. I host my own podcast for #mentalhealthawareness http://
