What is Robotic-Assisted Surgery?
Robotic-assisted surgery is an advanced form of minimally invasive surgery. Like conventional laparoscopic surgery, it is performed through several small incisions rather than one large surgical wound.
However, robotic-assisted surgery offers several advantages over standard laparoscopy. The robotic system provides the surgeon with a highly magnified three-dimensional view of the surgical area, improving depth perception and visual clarity. Its instruments also have wrist-like flexibility, allowing more precise and controlled movements than conventional rigid laparoscopic instruments. This can be particularly useful for complex operations or procedures performed in narrow or difficult-to-access areas of the body.
The robotic system is fully controlled by the surgeon at all times. It does not make decisions, move independently, or perform any part of the surgery without the surgeon’s direct input. The robotic system acts as an extension of the surgeon’s hands, allowing highly precise movements, improved flexibility, and enhanced visualisation during complex procedures.
