Prof. Kwan serves as the Senior Consultant of the Spine Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. His practice is mainly devoted to spinal deformity surgery, i.e. Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery using Percutaneous Pedicle Screw (PPS) i.e. spinal tumor and degenerative lumbar spine disease.

Prof. Kwan did his medical degree MBBS in University of Malaya (UM) back in 1990/1995. Following that he did his internship (rural service) in Taiping Hospital for 3 years before joining University of Malaya (UM) in 1998 to pursue his Master of Orthopaedic Surgery (MS Orth). Upon graduation in 2002, he was awarded ‘N. Subramaniam Award’ by the Malaysia Orthopaedic Association (MOA) for being the best student in the MS Orth (UM) in 2002. He was also awarded the ‘Mahmood Merican Award’ for acquiring the best research MS Orth thesis in the same year.

After his graduation, he further subspecialized and completed his training in the field of spinal surgery in University of Malaya and was later appointed as the Spinal Consultant and Chief of the Spine Unit. He has a vast experience in taking care and dealing with patients with spinal pathologies where he operated an average of 300 cases a year with approximately 150 cases (50%) are on spinal deformity particularly Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS).

Prof. Kwan is an active member of numerous international professional spine societies. He is well known internationally as well as in the regional spine community where he serves as the Honorary Secretary of the Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS). Currently, he is the active member of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS). Back in Malaysia, he serves as the Honorary Secretary for the Malaysia Spine Society (MSS).

He was a recipient of many grants for research and is an active researcher in the field of spine, particularly in areas related to scoliosis and the safe use of pedicle screws in spinal surgery. He has published more than 80 articles in the International/ National Peer Reviewed Scientific Journals. Recently, he was awarded numerous prestigious MOA research awards, namely ‘P. Balasubramaniam Best Published Translational Medicine Paper Award 2014 and 2015’ for the best basic sciences research published papers for 2 consecutive years. He was later awarded “Subir Sengupta Best Published Clinical Award 2017 and 2018” for the best clinical research published papers for another 2 consecutive years. Due to his vast academic contributions, he is appointed as a member of various editorial board members and reviewers for many notable journals, i.e. Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery, Asian Spine Journal, Malaysian Orthopaedic Journal and etc.

Prof. Kwan has written many academic books and videos related to orthopaedic and spinal surgery and has also, contributed book chapters regarding spinal disorders. Due to his dedicated teaching, he was conferred the ‘Best Lecturer (Clinical) Award by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya in the year 2013’.

He has organized numerous international conferences under MSS, APSS, SRS-IMAST and AOSpine. He has also chaired many professional spinal surgery meetings worldwide and has been an invited speaker over 50 times besides presenting over 200 scientific abstracts/presentations.
