Professor Azhar Merican is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur where he heads the Division of Joint Reconstruction. He is a prominent surgeon and leader in the field of joint replacement of the hip and knee, performing complex and revision arthroplasty on a regular basis. He was the first to perform robot-assisted orthopaedic surgery in Malaysia and is a proponent of patient-specific
Professor Azhar received his medical degree from the University of Southampton in 1992 on a Federal Scholarship by the Malaysian Government. He then commenced internship training at University Hospital (now known as University of Malaya Medical Centre) and subsequently attained his Master of Orthopaedic Surgery at the same institution in 1999. Thereafter, he became a clinical lecturer at the University of Malaya, where he was responsible for the management of a wide variety of orthopaedic cases, honing his skills in operating on difficult fractures such as pelvic injuries, eventually becoming Head of Trauma until 2011. Part of his working experience included a short stint with the plastic surgery unit where he developed microsurgical skills essential for his practice today.
Professor Azhar began his subspecialty training in the field of joint replacement at the Dorr Arthritis Institute in Los Angeles, USA in 2002, and finishing at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia in 2004. Since then, he has had vast experience in performing primary and complex arthroplasty as well as treating complications from these surgeries, including revisions. In 2008, he completed his doctorate at Imperial College London studying the patellofemoral joint and the role of soft tissue in patellar tracking and stability for which he was awarded the prize for the most number of journal publications from a PhD by the University of Malaya. An avid researcher, Professor Azhar has also authored numerous journal articles on the anterior cruciate ligament and 3D morphometry of the Asian hip and knee.
Professor Azhar is a keen teacher and has inspired many leading orthopaedic surgeons in the country. His lessons are often thought-provoking and insightful. He is also a much sought-after speaker, having travelled extensively to speak and share his knowledge and experience at numerous international meetings and conferences. Co-authoring a book on joint replacement is one of his many achievements. Professor Azhar is a reviewer with the Malaysian Orthopaedic Journal and sits on the Editorial Board of Knee Surgery and Related Research, the official journal of the Korean Knee Society. He is an active member of the Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society, Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association and is currently the president of the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association, one of the many roles he has served in.
