Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialty deals with the female health involving clinical prevention and management of diseases, and to provide optimum care to pregnant women to the menopausal age; ie from the womb to the tomb.
Obstetrics is the only specialty that could prevent or treat women as early as fetal life in order to produce a healthy person who will be the future assets of the country. It provides opportunity for a holistic approach in managing the women’s partner and the unborn fetus, antenatal diagnosis and intervention. On top of this, not only obstetrics gives the opportunity to share the bundle of joy of good outcome of the normal pregnancy, mother and baby friendly care and the satisfaction of handling difficult life threatening obstetrics emergencies.
Within the field of Gynaecology, there is a high reliance on technology ranging from high-resolution diagnostic imaging tools such as MRI, CT scan and 3D laparoscopic and other assisted procedures. In fact, gynaecologists were the pioneers for minimally invasive surgery, which has now been adopted into routine practice for most surgical specialities.
Technological advancements and breakthroughs in the past decade have provided exciting opportunities to extend treatment modalities to patients for example, common gynaecological conditions such as uterine fibroids no longer require surgery but can be managed medically or by using high frequency ultrasonography, medically assisted conception and certain types of cancer can be optimally treated with targeted chemotherapy.
Obstetricians and gynecologists are also involved with the stake holders; there is opportunity to be involved in women wellness programme such as cancer screening, contraception, menopause and hormone replacement therapy and even pre pregnancy care. The close collaboration with other clinical specialties such as medical, anesthesiology, paediatric, surgery, social and preventive medicine and healthcare will definitely ensure the best combine optimum care for women.
This specialty also offer further subspecialty fields namely, gynaeoncology, reproductive medicine, fetomaternal medicine or urogynaecology.
